Samuel Gray is a fine artist based in Northwest Arkansas, working primarily in charcoal alongside digital illustration. He studied art privately and at the University of Arkansas, and has been a working professional artist since 2010.
His work explores the depths of the human experience. Introspective and spiritual themes run through the pieces, drawn from his own soul searching and the longer journey of a life still in progress.
Each piece begins with an experience he is trying to understand. He interprets it in the hope of connecting with others, and of helping people find something of themselves in the work.
Charcoal is the primary medium, drawn slowly in layers, because it forgives nothing and therefore teaches everything. Digital illustration runs alongside it as its own practice, carrying the same themes toward a different kind of light.
Originals leave the studio once. Prints are made to order, one at a time, and checked by hand before they ship.
